Anything can be art. In my opinion though its not great art, but a nice illustration.

You've got me intrigued with this description. What you describe is almost Salvador Dali-esque (see attached), but obviously isn't. I'll have a search around, but it sounds like you've tried pretty hard yourself already...

Yeah, I'm not into art or anything, but I know I've seen this picture somewhere and it's haunting me now. I like it for the obvious symbolic reasons.

Correct, it's not Dali, but I see where you're coming from. It's quite simple, where Dali's paintings are often elaborate. Dali is also absurd, where the painting I'm looking for is more symbolic.

If it's any help, I think the background is grey or brown and the colors generally quite dark. It's lighter at the top and darker at the bottom.

Worst thing is I can't remember where I've seen it other than that it might've been on a wall in one of the many school's I've been to.

I have had another look for you today, but no luck I'm afraid... I even tried 'Bing.com' (Microsoft's new search engine) which is supposed to be more intuitive than 'good-ole' Google, but no luck...

No I'm pretty sure it had the author name at the bottom and it was someone you might've heard about, but not in the top 10 most common painters.
It's not like I've been to any art school, the paintings at the schools are usually posters resembling fameous paintings.
