False. Alternative 3 was the program, masquerading as a 'reputable' program which evaluates scientific issues. It was to be kind of a modern day Orson Welles broadcast. Its also untrue that it was never broadcast again (it was only shown once in Britain, but replayed in Australia and New Zealand).

I remember seeing this on British TV. It was not only broadcast on Anglia as that was not the Independant TV region I lived in at the time, and I'm sure it was before 1977 as I was in college by then and I saw it when I was still at school.

It was very plaudible. You have to remember that back then TV was a respectable and serious business in Britain, and you just did not expect tricks like this to be done. It was convincing and I got pretty shook up about it. Only when there was no follow up the following day did I have to conclude it was a hoax. Ther rumour is that it was done as an April 1st joke but was broadcast too early.
