former screaming eagle here. when i was in service, i have seen some POG ass marines, and some crazy fucking soldiers. it is very easy to judge the army vs the marines. i will concede that the marines are by far a more streamlined branch than the army. the army has a massive support infrastructure with its own bureaucracy and layers and layers of bullshit to get things done. from what I have seen, the marines mostly have the navy to fulfill those functions, as well as some admin people. every green beret and ranger i have ever met was a fucking kickass fucking warrior, even the "chub" could fucking run w/ 40-50lb kit at around a 7 minute mile pace. I donno, maybe when I served they kept their shitbags in a closet somewhere. that being said, every ranger i knew, whether from regiment or not, was squared away. you could tell the difference between a ranger officer without seeing their tab and most people would tell you SF is way easier than ranger school.
One thing that many people don't know of is the major split in Army culture between light and mechanized divisions. Mechanized divisions are where you see all the fat cunts who cry about road marching and PT. Light still has SOME standards, but overall standards have fallen branchwide. Part of the reason I left is because I couldn't believe how fucked up it was, organization-wise and I have had prior service marines tell me the same about their branch. In the 4 short years I was there I seen standards drop tremendously, I can only imagine what the REAL army was like, and how much it has changed since the old-timers getting ready to retire joined.
I have also had the pleasure of meeting some marines in my job field (artillery). they looked squared away and seemed to be in shape, but they did not know jack fucking shit about their jobs. my job was pretty important because it dictated exactly where artillery rounds would land and one small fuck up can get lots of Americans killed. I knew more as a private than their sgt, but i won't judge the entire marine artillery on one fucked up section, though.
tl;dr: there are shitbags everywhere regardless of branch.
