It really depends what you want to get out of the cap. You can't polish a turd; if the original uncompressed cap has low res. and bitrate, you're not going to achieve much, no matter how many filters and passes you do.
If it's a good quality stream that you've captured, a reliable codec like h.264 would be good. You don't *need* to have 1080p for your captures, 720p would be great using a h.264 codec. Alternatively, if you don't mind a corresponding loss in quality over overall file size, for my experience xvid will do the job.
If you're wondering about codecs, softpedia or afterdawn should be able to lead you in the right direction. Both are very good forums for that sort of thing. I, of course, know others but I'm not go to explicitly tell you about them here, of all places. Hope that helps.
